SACOLÉ - DANILLO BIGHI
From the moment Danillo Bighi (b. 1987) moved from Rio de Janeiro to Amsterdam, his life-long passion for photography, transformed into a full time profession. What fascinates him the most, is how documentary photography has the ability to capture remarkable moments, people and places we encounter on an everyday basis.
His slightly sentimental project ‘Sacolé’ looks at one of those encounters that Bighi remembers from his childhood spent in Rio de Janeiro. Bighi recalls, the extremely hot summer days, when he and his friends used to play on the square in front of the house. In order to cool down a little they often treated themselves with Sacolé - a sweet ice cream, made out of frozen fruit juice and sold all across the city. On those hot, sunny days, Sacolé is something everyone from a child to an adult dreams of, thirsty for a cold refreshment.
In the mind of Bighi, Sacolé stands for a delicious summer treat and the nostalgic taste of home. However, there are others for whom making and selling Sacolé is a way of living. In his project, Bighi documents the daily routine of one of those Brazilian families, giving tribute to their hard work and meticulous craft. Bighi captures the entire process, starting from the production at private homes, through transporting the ice cream with the whole stand to a given location and eventually the moment of selling the sweet refreshments and making people happy. In addition of tracing the story of one of his childhood memories, Bighi investigates and explores how the relevance of things might change depending on one’s social position.
