MARZENA KWINTERA – TRAPPED IN MY ROLE AND LOST IN DREAMS
Marzena Kwintera (b.1980) is a Polish photographer living and working in The Hague, the Netherlands, since 2004. She particularly operates in the fashion domain and her photographs are primarily black and white - highlighted with natural light. In her series ‘Lost in Dreams’, Kwintera portrays a woman in her dreams, expressing both the beauty and fear through the model’s body language; aspects that ultimately surround this nightly process. Additionally, the series addresses womanhood and celebrates the beauty of a female body.
In her latest project, ‘Trapped in my Role’, she was strongly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s horror-thriller film ‘The Birds’ (1963), specifically the scenes with violent birds attacking the people of Bodega Bay, California. A similar bizarre, mysterious and disturbing atmosphere can be felt from Kwintera’s images. The interplay of humans and nature is at the centre of the series, presenting the ongoing and destructive fight for power. The photographs are portraying tension in a subtle way through a choreographing of the model, dramatic composition and an artistic play with light and shadow.
